This winter has been extremely mild, having large impacts on
the economy. Some sources estimate that specialty retailers lost $185 million
in sales in November because of the weather and another $158 million during the
first two weeks in December. These affects can be seen in clothing sales (such
as the north face), food sales (such as cambells soup), and ski resorts.
Closer to home, Greek Peak Mountain Resort, located in
Cortland, New York has been especially effected by the mild winter this year. The
resort has the ability to make their own snow, however, this requires
temperatures below 26 degrees. The warm temperatures experienced in November and
December forced Greek Peak to postpone the opening of their season several
weeks. The resort has been able to rely on other amenities such as their indoor
water park to help them weather the storm, or lack thereof.
Greek Peak, and many other winter based businesses, are
hoping the late start to their season will push the end of their season further
out.
Hi Katie! I liked that you used a local business for your blog, and the unseasonable weather our area has experienced this winter would most certainly be an issue that Greek Peak has been forced to deal with. While I do not go skiing myself, my family members bought season passes for this year, and they most certainly have been disappointed by the weather. Do you go skiing at Greek Peak? I wanted to go tubing there, but the weather just hasn't been cold enough. On the days that there could be snow up there, we opted out, as we figured the place would be packed. I also liked your mention of other retailers affected by the nation's warm weather. Now that you've mentioned it, I haven't been eating as much soup either. I should probably check the expiration dates of the cans that I have in our kitchen cupboards. I'd be interested in learning more about the indoor water park at Greek Peak. I have a friend who works there, and I thought I remembered her saying that you had to be a member, or have a season pass to go to the water park. Have you visited the water park? I'm always looking for new and exciting things to do on the weekends.
ReplyDeleteHey Ang!!! I've never been skiiing before and I don't see it going well if i tried! I have gone tubing at Greek Peak before and it was a fun time! I've never been to the indoor water park, but my sister takes her kids there often and they love it! You don't have to be a member or have a season pass, it's a bit pricey but I was recently told by my current (your past) manager that there are always coupons available, sometimes through the wbng bng bargains! Let me know if you check it out and what you think!
